TEF Exam

(Test d'Évaluation du Français)

The TEF is a certification used to prove your level of French, delivered by the Chamber of Commerce of Paris.

Results are valid for 2 years.

This test is conducted on a computer.

If you are interested in an exam session but do not see a suitable date available, please contact us.
It might be possible to open a session depending on the demand.

The exam takes place on site at Alliance Française Cambridge, 1 Red Cross Lane, CB2 0QU.
This exam is computer-based and results are available after a period of one to two weeks.

Cancellations will not be refunded in full or in part.
Speaking exams are conducted on the same day.

Please note! The TEF IRN assesses the ability to communicate in French in everyday situations from level A1 to level B2.

Frequently Asked Questions

How will I be able to write accents for the writing exam?

The TEF software includes a digital keyboard with accents. We also have AZERTY keyboards you can use.

Can you pause audios for the listening exam?

The audios will be played automatically and you won't be able to go backwards once you change questions. Here is a tutorial to understand the format of the listening exam better.

I want to apply for French nationality, which level do I need to obtain?

You need to get a B1 level. The TEF IRN maximum level is B1 as this certification has been specifically designed for immigration purposes. You can sit the TEF if you want to know your language level on the CEFR scale (A1–C2) .

How long will it take to receive my certificate?

It usually takes less than 15 days. You will automatically receive it by email.

How many points do I need to pass the TEF IRN?

You get the A1 level if you obtain a score equal to or higher than 100 for each test.
You get the A2 level if you obtain a score equal to or higher than 200 for at least 3 tests AND a score equal to or higher than 167 for each test.
You get the B1 level if you obtain a score equal to or higher than 300 for at least 3 tests AND a score equal to or higher than 267 for each one of these tests.
